Let down

I expected the Democratic turnout today to blow away all the predictions, and I expected Edwards to make a strong showing, maybe even win. It looks as if I was half right.

Our precinct had twice as many people show up as expected. We had five delegates and chose one of those for Edwards (20 percent by my math). I can't believe the statewide results I'm seeing now.

I suspected what Cory Farley describes in his blog today. The volunteers at our caucus were awfully casual. Actually, I think the Washoe Dems site says no one would be turned away. Of course, it's hard to tell how Republicans voting in the Democratic primary would affect it. I'm surprised they went for Obama because I've heard they are excited about going up against Clinton. Could it be "anybody but Edwards"?

We had a weird experience at our caucus. We had a handful of Kucinich supporters, and the other groups approached them in turn. One obnoxious man rudely turned away the Obama and Edwards people. Then he went over to the Clinton group and announced, "I'll join you if you'll let me be your delegate to the county convention." Huh?

He proceeded to conduct the delegate election for the Clinton group. He started out by giving a speech about himself, saying he was a veteran. They had two delegates to elect and four candidates. He asked for a show of hands for himself and counted them; then he called for votes for the others and counted their votes, too. Surprise, surprise, he ended up being elected (and gave a thank you speech).

I have a hard time believing a Kucinich supporter is going to go to a Democratic convention and enthusiastically support Clinton. I'd love to know if he was already on the Democrat list when he showed up or registered at the door.

No comment on my opinion of the intellect of the Clinton crowd.
