Opinions keep coming

I tried to take a break from my blog around Christmas, but the opinions just keep surfacing. Here's an attempt to move them from my mind to cyberspace. Following my role model Cory Farley's example, I am putting all these snippets in one entry because none is worth a full entry at this point.
  • When health officials decided people were getting sick from eating meat they bought at Safeway, why did the U.S. Department of Agriculture suggest throwing away any remaining meat instead of taking it back to Safeway for a refund? Is that the difference between a "public health alert" and a recall? (A public health alert is what was issued in this case.) Is food contamination becoming so common that stores don't want to reimburse customers who bought tainted food from them any more?
  • Do Evelyn Mount and other agencies who pass out food screen the recipients for need? I notice that the Food Bank distributes food to a long list of organizations that pass it on to individuals. Would it be possible for one person or family to visit a different organization each day and get more food than intended? I don't know whether it matters to the people who pass out the food, but it does matter to me as a donor.
  • How many times have the residents and police reclaimed Pat Baker Park from the drug dealers? How many times have the drug dealers moved back in? Are the residents and police doing anything different this time to keep the park safe? We can add this story to Farley's evergreen list.
  • I wrote in October that I didn't expect any news to come out of the Darren Mack trial. Yes, I was wrong! How did he find this new lawyer? Wasn't his first lawyer doing the right thing for his defense by not looking for the murder weapons? How would finding the gun that misfired prove who pulled the trigger or when? How would the knife prove it was used in self-defense? And, if these weapons hold magical properties that would prove Mack's innocence, why did he throw them away? Finally, did the Mack family really believe he would be acquitted?
  • Why do the national media make a big deal about Mitt Romney's being a Mormon and never mention that Harry Reid is one, too? Why is it OK for governors and Senate leaders to be Mormons and not presidents? I'm not a Romney supporter, but the discussion of his religion makes me uncomfortable. I've known Mormons since I was a kid in Southern Nevada, and I like most of them.
  • Am I the last person to find Reno 911 on local TV? Just in case I'm not, it's on KAME at 11 weeknights. Maybe I'll be caught up on all the episodes before The Daily Show comes back on.
  • Are those Lexus commercials good, or what? I'm not ready to go out and buy one, but I think the commercials are really well done. They use classic advertising tricks beautifully.
  • Did anyone notice the half-page Scheels ad in the paper Christmas Eve? (Scheels is the largest sporting goods store in the world, or something like that, being built next to I-80 in Sparks). It says, "He is born" above a picture of a nativity scene. Under the nativity scene is a Ronald Reagan quote about how blessed Americans are. At the bottom it pointedly says, "Merry Christmas from Scheels." No wimpy "Happy Holidays" for this outfit—they want us to know up front where they stand. I can live with the Christian message, but someone needs to tell Scheels that Reagan is not universally loved.
  • Why is Christmas clothing a fashion "don't"? I'm tired of being careful not to go out in public when I wear one of my Christmas tops.
  • Who does Cornerstone think will be fooled by the signs on their dump trucks? I happened to be behind one yesterday and saw this sign: "Warning—Stay back 200 feet—Not responsible for broken windshields." Huh? By the time you're close enough to read the sign, you're already within 20 feet. No one can stay 200 feet back unless you're on an open highway. And can you shed liability by announcing you won't be liable? I don't think so. If you can, I'm going to put a sign on my car saying I'm not liable if it hits anything and one on my dog saying I'm not liable if she bites anyone. Anyway, isn't there a law about stuff coming off vehicles and doing damage to other vehicles? Is Cornerstone just using these signs to discourage people from writing down the license plate number when rocks slam into their windshields?
There. I feel better now.
