Why you should look up when you're taking out the garbage

It seemed warmer today than it's been for a while, and I made a point of going out and walking around for a while to absorb some sunshine and fresh air. (Unfortunately, I couldn't help starting a mental list of all the things I need to do this spring. In fact, there's so much to do I should start the first decent day after Christmas.)

I remembered today was the second shortest day of the year (?), so I watched the sun drop down behind Mt. Rose. I hurried to put out the garbage and the recycling bins while I still had enough light. I was glad it wasn't too cold.

I bagged all the newspapers and made one last trip outside with them. To the west, the sky had turned bright salmon. To the east, the full moon had just risen above the Virginia Range. I kept looking back and forth, trying to decide which was prettier and wishing I could capture both of them in one picture. It was a beautiful moment I had to share. I hope I wasn't the only one who saw it.
